History and Archaeology

Aboa Vetus is built around an excavated medieval city block. The discovery of a part of old Turku during renovation work on the Rettig Palace took even archaeologists by surprise.

The arched cellars and cobblestone streets had been buried underground centuries ago, without a trace. Now the public can see them just as they were uncovered, and a museum rich in experience has been created around them.

In the Middle Ages, Turku was the second largest city in Sweden after Stockholm. Now Aboa Vetus takes an archaeological view of the history of Finland and Turku, illuminating the life of ordinary citizens over the centuries. Archaeological data is complemented by numerous other scientific studies, all of which are illustrated in the museum.

Archaeological findings and the experiences offered by the city ruins are complemented by a variety of multimedia programmes. Aboa Vetus multimedia shows for example how Turku's city profile has changed over the centuries and who has lived in the houses on the site. The multimedia presentations also allow you to walk the streets of medieval Turku, sail up the River Aura to Turku Cathedral and learn e.g. how archaeologists examine the bones they find.
