International Conference:
Towards sustainable futures -Tools and strategies

Conference is aimed at both researchers and corporate representatives. The aim of the multidisciplinary conference is to bring together those interested in sustainable development and futures oriented research. The participants will be offered new perspectives and methods for measuring sustainable development and creating strategies. The conference will also cast a look into how sustainability aspects are actually taken into consideration in corporations.

The lecturers of the conference include well-known Finnish and foreign experts on sustainable development, and persons responsible for the implementation of corporate sustainability strategies. The aim is to create a base for more intense cooperation between researchers and corporations by directing the conference at both researchers working with sustainability issues, and corporate executives, development managers, environmental managers and others interested in the subject.

The target groups are researchers of environmental and social sciences and those corporate representatives, who are responsible for environmental and social strategies, research and marketing in companies. About 10 percent of the participants are foreign, mainly representatives of European Union’s Sustainability Strategy Thematic Network.

The responsible director of the conference is Finland Futures Research Centre’s director Professor Markku Wilenius and the scientific director is Academy Research Fellow Dr. Jyrki Luukkanen.

The institutes, research centres, companies and researchers have a chance to display and demonstrate their environmental activities, knowledge and research with poster presentations in the lobby hall during the conference. The conference will take place in Tampere at the Tampere Hall on 14.-15.6.2004. Tampere Hall is the largest concert and congress centre in the Nordic countries.

International Summer School

As in previous years Finland Futures Academy (FFA) organizes a four-day International Summer School in Tampere at the same time with the conference. The teaching structure of the summer school follows the topics of the conference and the students are free to participate in the conference presentations and workshops.

Finland Futures Academy is a national network of the universities for facilitating academic educational and research programmes in the futures studies. By means of the network, students in all 17 member universities are able to participate in multiform education where the latest virtual environments are utilized. FFA is coordinated by the Finland Futures Research Centre. The International Advisory Board of the FFA has been established in June 2000 and its focus is on creating co-operation between European higher education and research units.
